What’s often forgotten about is Florida did have a bit of a Whig tradition in some quarters and you had leaders from the territorial days like Richard, Keith Call who were at heart still Whigish and unionists hence hesitant about secession.
I bought this neat little book called "The Whigs of Florida" that covered it well
I'm going to be planning a series on Florida governor elections from then to present for my patreon, which i plan to start in the late spring. Trace the history (in brief form) of Florida political dynamics - including internal fights in the Jim Crow era
Also, I’m going to look for that Whigs of Florida book, as that would be really interesting in terms of the territorial and early statehood days, and the internal flights.
Some great history here. Thanks, Matt.
Georgia also. Obviously Alexander Stephens had been a Whig!
